TWO-EARED LISTENING

LISTENING WITH HEART & MIND.

Two-Eared Listening is a teaching shared by Chief Mi’sel Joe, Traditional Saqamaw of Miawpukek First Nation. It invites us to listen deeply with the intention of learning and understanding.

For RFNL, Two-Eared Listening is an important part of how we understand restorative justice in Newfoundland and Labrador. Chief Joe has been a mentor and guide for RFNL since 2018, when he helped lead the planning of the first Two-Eared Listening Gathering. Since then, he has continued to remind us that to understand restorative justice, we must first hear the stories of injustice.

In Two-Eared Listening, we are asked to receive new learning with an open mind and an open heart, suspending judgement so that trust, respect, and understanding can grow. This practice supports respectful relationships, deepens understanding, and calls us to honour all people and creation as worthy and interconnected.
